History:
The Cornish Rex breed began on July 21, 1950 in Bodmin Moor, Cornwall, England. A red & white farm cat, Serena, had a litter of kittens and among them was a red tabby male. He was unlike any other kitten seen before. Instead of short straight hair like his littermates, he had tiny tightly rolled curls covering his body, somewhat like a lamb in appearance. As he grew, he became long and slender with a whippy tail, huge ears and a narrow head. Even his whiskers were curled and crinkly.

His owner, Nina Ennismore, upon taking the kitten to the vet to be neutered, recognized the kitten for what it was, a true mutation, and persuaded his owner to breed Kalibunker back to his mother. Several curly kittens resulted. A descendent of Kalibunker, Lomorna Cove, was shipped to the US and the breed continues.

Appearance & Character:
The Cornish Rex is intelligent, inquisitive & an extrovert, shows great resourscefulness in getting what it wants, playful and affectionate, he enjoys indoor life.

The marcelled coat is composed only of an undercoat, which requires very little care. The coat does not shed as does a normal cat's coat, but rather the cat will lose hair, much as we humans do, and is usually well tolerated by those individuals with allergies to cats. Due to their complete lack of guard hair, they need to groom themselves very little, thereby creating very little dander.

The coloring of the Cornish Rex may be of any variety including colorpoints. The major factor is the coat. It is so important in the show ring that usually at least 50 points will be allotted to the marcelling of the coat.

This cat is very lean and resembles a Whippet dog with its arched back and tucked up stomach. Long, thin legs and the way it poses on its feet make him look as if he is standing on tiptoe.
